Down on the Farm: Boston Red Sox Double-A Affiliate, Throws No-Hitter

Today, in their first game without their manager Chad Epperson, the Portland Sea Dogs threw a combined no-hitter in a 3-2 win over the Hartford Yard Goats. Epperson is the acting third base coach of the Boston Red Sox. The game wasn’t shortened in any way; it was a full nine-inning game where Portland used three pitchers in the game.

Pitching

Hayden Mullins, the Red Sox’s 15th-ranked prospect and their ninth-ranked pitching prospect, got the start for the Sea Dogs, going five innings. He allowed two runs, none earned; he walked four and struck out five. Portland turned to the bullpen with Caleb Borden and Reidis Sena appearing for two innings each. The two relievers combined for four innings; they didn’t allow a base runner and struck out seven combined hitters. Sena ended up getting the win.

The Game

Hartford jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third. Jose Torres led off with a walk, then after back-to-back outs, Torres stole second base. Dylan Jorge walked, and Torres stole third base. Andy Perez then reached on an error by first baseman Ronald Rosario, allowing Torres and Jorge to score. Portland would tie the game in the sixth inning. The Red Sox’s top hitting prospect, Franklin Arias, reached on a single. Two batters later, Nate Baez hit a two-run home run to tie the game at two. In the bottom of the eighth, the Sea Dogs took the lead as Rosario made up for his error with a single, driving home Brooks Brannon to make it 3-2, and that would be all she wrote.
