The Red Sox got on the board in the bottom of the second inning. Detroit committed an error, and Wilyer Abreu walked, each scoring one run. Hao-Yu Lee singled to center field, which helped the Tigers tie the game at two in the top of the fourth.
A single by Jahmai Jones gave Detroit the lead, 3-2, in the top of the sixth. Roman Anthony singled to center following a 6-pitch at-bat, which helped Boston tie the game at three in the bottom of the sixth.
Boston took the lead, 6-3, in the bottom of the seventh behind a two-run clutch single from Ceddanne Rafaela and an RBI single from Carlos Narváez.
Garrett Whitlock got the win for the Red Sox. The right-handed pitcher surrendered zero hits and zero runs over one inning, striking out none and walking none. Tyler Holton took the loss for Detroit. The southpaw went two-thirds of an inning, allowing three runs on four hits, striking out one and walking two. Sonny Gray got the start for the Red Sox. The starter left with a hamstring injury and was placed on the 15-day injured list following the game. He gave up three hits and one run over two and two-thirds innings, striking out two and walking one. Jack Flaherty started on the bump for the Tigers. The righty gave up three hits, two runs, and none earned over three and one-third innings, striking out three and walking six. Aroldis Chapman collected the save.

Ceddanne Rafaela had the day off but entered in the bottom of the seventh and had the clutch two RBI single, which put the Red Sox in front, and he would also score a run in the game.
