The Red Sox, despite seeing their five-run lead whittled down by the end, still held off for an 8-6 victory this morning. The Tigers closed the gap by scoring on an RBI single and a two-RBI double. The Red Sox got on the board in the bottom of the second inning. Detroit committed an error, and Wilyer Abreu walked, each scoring one run. A single by Jahmai Jones gave Detroit the lead, 3-2, in the top of the sixth. Roman Anthony singled to center following a 6-pitch at-bat, which helped Boston tie the game at three in the bottom of the sixth.
Boston took the lead, 6-3, in the bottom of the seventh behind a two-run clutch single from Ceddanne Rafaela and an RBI single from Carlos Narváez.

The southpaw went two-thirds of an inning, allowing three runs on four hits, striking out one and walking two. Sonny Gray got the start for the Red Sox. The starter left with a hamstring injury and was placed on the 15-day injured list following the game. He gave up three hits and one run over two and two-thirds innings, striking out two and walking one. Jack Flaherty started on the bump for the Tigers. The righty gave up three hits, two runs, and none earned over three and one-third innings, striking out three and walking six. Aroldis Chapman collected the save.
