Detroit Tigers Deal Casey Mize to San Diego Padres

The Detroit Tigers, after trading away Tarik Skubal to the Dodgers on Saturday, have now dealt another starter to an NL West team. They’ve traded right-handed pitcher Casey Mize to the Padres along with Gage Workman. The return for the Tigers is left-handed pitchers Kash Mayfield and Jackson Wolf.

Mize, this season in 16 starts, is 4-6 with a 2.70 ERA, a 0.99 WHIP, and 85 strikeouts in 86.2 innings. In 105 appearances, with 103 of those coming as starts is 27-31 with a 3.95 ERA, a 1.24 WHIP, and 450 strikeouts in 526.2 innings. Workman, this season in 16 games for the Tigers, is hitting .158 with a .553 OPS. He has three doubles, two home runs, five RBI, and three runs scored. In 28 career big league games, he has hit .167 with a .534 OPS. He has four doubles, two home runs, seven RBI, and three runs scored.

In 15 starts this season, Mayfield is 3-1 at High-A. He has a 3.54 ERA, a 1.16 WHIP, and 62 strikeouts in 53.1 innings. In 34 career minor league starts, he’s 4-6 with a 3.71 ERA, a 1.19 WHIP, and 150 strikeouts in 114 innings. Wolf has made 24 appearances, with 17 coming as starts this season. He’s 5-10 with a 7.05 ERA, a 1.66 WHIP, and 90 strikeouts in 89.1 innings. He has made one big league start in 2023, picking up the win, allowing three runs on six hits. He walked one and struck out one in five innings.
