Detroit Tigers Notebook: MoTown Magic Put Out, Jack Flaherty Rehabs, Ben Malgeri Debuts, and More

The Detroit Tigers had their four-game winning streak snapped as they lost the middle game of the series to the Yankees. They dropped to 34-45. They’re seven games back of the White Sox for the American League Central. They’re five games back of the Blue Jays for the final spot in the American League wild card standings.

MLB Game Recap

The Tigers opened the scoring as Zach McKinstry scored on a wild pitch. Dillon Dingler then drove home Ben Malgeri on a single after Malgeri recorded his first career hit earlier in the inning. The Yankees got a run back in the fourth on a groundout. In the sixth, a two-run home run and an RBI double gave the Yankees the lead. The Tigers got a run back in the sixth on an RBI double from Matt Vierling. The Tigers’ bats didn’t have the magic in the ninth tonight, and the winning streak was snapped.

Casey Mize went 5.2 innings, allowing four runs on eight hits. He walked one and struck out six. The bullpen, consisting of Tyler Holton, Kyle Finnegan, and Enmanuel De Jesus, shut down the Yankees. They went 3.1 innings, allowing a hit, a walk, and striking out seven.

Standout Performer

Dillon Dingler went 3-4 with an RBI, a double, and a run scored. How he’s not in the All-Star conversation is absolutely astonishing.

Key News & Notes

The Tigers, before the game, called up Ben Malgeri to make his big league debut. He went 2-3 with a run scored. He and Dingler were the only two Tigers to record multiple hits in the game. Trei Cruz was optioned to Triple-A Toledo for Malgeri after going 0-5 with three strikeouts in two games.

Jack Flaherty made a rehab appearance at Double-A Erie. He went 5.2 innings, allowing two runs on three hits. He walked one and struck out seven.
