The Detroit Tigers got back in the win column as they started their series against the Astros. They are now 30-42. They’re nine games back of the Chicago White Sox for the American League Central. They’re six games back of the Athletics for the final spot in the American League wild card standings.

The Tigers opened the scoring right away at the top of the first as Colt Keith was hit by a pitch, bringing home a run. In the second, Kevin McGonigle hit a solo home run, then in the third, Keith hit a two-run home run, followed by a solo home run from Spencer Torkelson. The Astros got the board as Issac Paredes hit a two-run home run, followed by a Jose Altuve home run to make it 5-3. Dillon Dingler would score on a passed ball in the fifth to make it 6-3. Keith’s big night was just beginning in the third, when he would hit a two-run home run in the seventh and a solo home run in the ninth as the Tigers won 9-3.

The Tigers had a bullpen game using six different pitchers as Drew Anderson, Jacob Waguespack, Kyle Finnegan, Tyler Holton, Will Vest, and Enmanuel De Jesus all pitched. They allowed three runs on seven hits, walking three and striking out ten. Anderson got the start, going 2.2 innings, allowing a run on two hits. He walked two and struck out five.

Colt Keith went 3-4 with six RBI. He had five RBI off home runs, and the other came on a hit-by-pitch.

The Tigers had Zack Short claimed off waivers by the New York Mets yesterday. In 23 games this season with Detroit, he hit .167 with a .565 OPS. He had two doubles, two RBI, three runs scored, and seven walks. Framber Valdez faces his former team for the first time tonight. He spent eight seasons with the Astros, making 188 appearances, with 166 of those coming as starts. He went 81-52 with a 3.36 ERA, a 1.20 WHIP, and 1053 strikeouts in 1080.2 innings.
