The Miami Marlins and Pittsburgh Pirates opened their three-game series Tuesday night with one of baseball’s most intriguing young pitching matchups. Paul Skenes and Eury Pérez each took the mound, but Pérez and the Marlins came away with a 2-0 victory.

Eury Pérez Dominates Paul Skenes
Pérez entered the game with a 6-9 record, 3.39 ERA, 3.67 FIP, 1.11 WHIP, and 128 strikeouts across 116.2 innings. Meanwhile, Skenes came in at 9-11 with a 3.88 ERA, 3.64 FIP, 1.16 WHIP, and 166 strikeouts in 134.2 innings.
Pérez immediately established himself, striking out the side in the first inning. He struck out four of the first six batters he faced and kept Pittsburgh off the scoreboard throughout his outing.
The Marlins gave Pérez all the support he needed in the third inning. Esteury Ruiz hit a solo home run to give Miami a 1-0 lead.
Miami added another run in the fifth. Ruiz reached after getting hit by a pitch, stole second base, and scored on an infield single that turned into a throwing error.
Pérez finished seven scoreless innings, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out seven. He threw 100 pitches, with 62 going for strikes.
Marlins Bullpen Finishes the Job
Skenes completed five innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits. He walked one and struck out four while throwing just 65 pitches.
Yohan Ramirez finished the game for Pittsburgh with four strikeouts over the final three innings.
Michael Petersen and Pete Fairbanks closed out the win for Miami. Fairbanks recorded his 18th save as the Marlins secured a 2-0 victory.
