MLB Spring Training Recap: Tigers Shut Out in Skubal’s Spring Debut

Two Central Division rivals clashed in Grapefruit League play today. The Minnesota Twins and Detroit Tigers met for the first time this season today in Lakeland, FL.

Twins vs. Tigers 

Scoring

A pitchers’ duel between the two teams started things off before Emmanuel Rodriguez crushed his second home run of the spring. That made it 1-0 Twins. In the seventh Alex Jackson added a solo home run for Minnesota to make it 2-0. That was Jackson’s first big fly of Grapefruit League play. In the eighth, the Twins tacked on another run as Kala’i Rosario singled home Noah Cardenas 

Pitching

Minnesota

Mick Abel got the start for the Twins. Abel went three shutout innings. He allowed two hits, didn’t walk anyone, and struck out five. Connor Prielipp was next for Minnesota. He went 1.2 innings giving up two hits, walking three, and striking out two. Nick Trabacchi retired the only batter he faced. Travis Adams went one inning and didn’t allow a base runner and struck out one. Cody Laweryson and Marco Raya had the seventh and eighth for Minnesota, neither allowed a base runner; Raya recorded a strikeout. Luis Quinones got the ninth.

Detroit 

The reigning back-to-back American League Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal made his 2026 spring debut. He went two innings allowing two hits. He didn’t issue a walk and struck out four. Drew Anderson was first out of the bullpen for Detroit. He allowed just one hit in two innings and struck out three. Brant Hurter was next and he allowed a home run, the only hit he allowed. He didn’t issue a walk and struck out one. Beau Brieske came in for the Tigers next. He allowed two hits one of which was a home run and struck out two. Brennan Hanifee was next and he allowed a run on a hit and walked one while striking out two. Ethan Sloan had the ninth and he didn’t allow a base runner and struck out one.

The Tigers are on the road tomorrow as they face the Atlanta Braves with first pitch at 1:05 PM EST. The Twins have a split-squad game tomorrow with half the roster facing the Baltimore Orioles and the other half on the road against the Tampa Bay Rays. Both games start at 1:05 PM EST.
