Boston Red Sox Notebook: Series Loss, Roster Moves, and More

The Boston Red Sox dropped the series finale to the Nationals to fall to 37-48. They’re 13.5 games back of the Rays for the American League East. They’re six games back for the final spot in the American League wild card standings.

MLB Game Recap

The Nationals opened the scoring with a two-run home run in the first. In the fourth, they added five more with a solo home run, a two-run single, an RBI double play, and an RBI double to make it 7-0. The Nationals got a three-run home run in the seventh to make it 10-0. The Red Sox got on the board in the eighth as Caleb Durbin drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 10-1. Nate Eaton grounded into a fielder’s choice, bringing home another run, but that was it in a 10-2 loss.

Payton Tolle lasted three innings, allowing six runs on seven hits. He walked three and struck out five. Ryan Watson went two innings, allowing a run on three hits. He walked one and struck out one. Jovani Moran made his return, going 1.2 innings, allowing a run. He didn’t allow a hit, walked two, and struck out three. Alec Gamboa went 2.1 innings, allowing two runs on three hits. He walked four and struck out one.

Standout Performer

Willson Contreras went 2-4 with a run scored. He had a walk in the first, a single in the sixth, and a single in the eighth.

Key News & Notes

Last night, the Red Sox acquired infielder Brett Harris from the Athletics in exchange for right-handed pitcher Ben Hansen. Harris was optioned to Triple-A Worcester.

Before today’s game, the Red Sox placed Connelly Early on the injured list and designated Tommy Kahnle for assignment. Jovani Moran was activated, and they recalled Alec Gamboa.

Brayan Bello got the ball tonight for Worcester, going five innings and allowing three runs on five hits. He didn’t issue a walk and struck out six. He has made four starts, posting a 4.34 ERA, a 1.93 WHIP, and 22 strikeouts in 18.2 innings pitched.

The Red Sox are back on Friday in Anaheim against the Los Angeles Angels. Jake Bennett gets the ball; he’s 2-3 with a 3.27 ERA, a 1.06 WHIP, and 25 strikeouts in 33 innings.
