Boston Red Sox Notebook: Red Sox Walk-Off Yankees, Swept Yankees, Sonny Nearly Perfect, and More

The Boston Red Sox won the third game of the series over the Yankees, claiming the series; they’re now 36-46. They’re 12.5 games back of the Yankees for the American League East. They’re 4.5 games back for the final spot in the American League wild card standings.

MLB Game Recap

The Red Sox got on the board in the fourth behind a Caleb Durbin two-RBI single, making it 2-0. The Yankees would tie it in the ninth, forcing the game to extras. In the tenth, a single and a fielder’s choice made it 4-2 Yankees. Anthony Seigler led off the inning with an RBI single to make it 4-3. Masataka Yoshida doubled to make it second and third when Tsung-Che Cheng hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game. Yoshida tagged to third, and Jarren Duran singled to right field to walk off the Yankees.

Sonny Gray pitched well before handing the ball over to Tyron Guerrero. Guerrero went 0.2 innings after Gray. Aroldis Chapman had the ninth looking to shut the door. He struggled, allowing two runs, one earned on a hit. He walked one and struck out two. Justin Slaten got the tenth, and he struggled going one inning, allowing two runs, none earned, on a hit; he didn’t allow a walk and struck out one.

Standout Performer

Gray was phenomenal tonight. He was five outs away from a perfect game, but a one-out single in the eighth ended that and his night. Gray went 7.1 scoreless innings. He walked one and struck out nine.

Romy Gonzalez returned to the Red Sox lineup, going 0-4.

Patrick Sandoval made another rehab start at Triple-A Worcester. He went four innings, allowing a run on three hits. He walked one and struck out three. Jovani Moran also made a rehab appearance at Worcester, going two scoreless innings. He didn’t allow a hit or issue a walk and struck out two.

The Washington Nationals come to town next. Ranger Suarez gets the ball. He is 3-3 with a 2.83 ERA, a 1.14 WHIP, and 84 strikeouts in 82.2 innings.
