Boston Red Sox Notebook: Abreu, Eaton & Gray Lead Red Sox, 12 Strikeouts in High-A, and More

The Boston Red Sox took the middle game of their series in Colorado, improving to 32-45. They’re 14.5 games back of the Yankees for the American League East. They’re six games back of the Blue Jays for the final spot in the American League wild card standings.

MLB Game Recap

The Red Sox opened the scoring with an RBI triple from Wilyer Abreu, who brought home Nate Eaton. In the second, Eaton singled home a run to make it 2-0. The Rockies got a run back on a solo home run in the bottom of the second. Wilyer Abreu added to the Red Sox’s lead with a solo home run in the fifth. In the sixth, Eaton drove home a run on an RBI double to make it 4-1 Red Sox. Ceddanne Rafaela would single home Eaton to make it 5-1. The Rockies got a run back in the ninth on a solo home run, but it wasn’t enough as the Red Sox won 5-2. 

Sonny Gray went seven innings, allowing a run on six hits. He walked three and struck out a season-high 11. Justin Slaten had the eighth, allowing a hit. Garrett Whitlock, the ninth, allowed a home run and struck out one

Nate Eaton went 3-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. He had two doubles and a stolen base in the win.

Key News & Notes

The Red Sox signed catcher Andrew Knizner to a minor league deal. Knizner played in Triple-A Albuquerque for Colorado this season. In 33 games, he hit .279 with a .962 OPS. He had eight doubles, ten home runs, 22 RBI, and 22 runs scored.

Romy Gonzalez started a rehab in Worcester, targeting a return on Saturday against the Yankees. He went 1-4 in his first game at Triple-A, where he was the designated hitter. Patrick Sandoval also started that game, going 3.1 innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits. He walked one and struck out one.
