Boston Red Sox Notebook: Red Sox Walked-Off, Bennett’s Career High in Strikeouts, and More

The Boston Red Sox dropped the opener of their series in Colorado, falling to 31-45. They’re 14.5 games back of the Yankees for the American League East. They’re seven games back of the Blue Jays for the final spot in the American League wild card standings.

The Red Sox broke the scoreless tie in the sixth as Willson Contreras doubled home a run, then Contreras scored on a single by Caleb Durbin. In the eighth, Colorado had a chance to get back in the game with runners on first and second. On a single, Ceddanne Rafaela threw the runner out at home to keep it 2-0. They were out of the inning on the next batter, thanks to a base-running mistake. In the ninth with the bases loaded, the Rockies walked it off with a triple. 

Jake Bennett went six shutout innings. He allowed four hits, no walks, and struck out a career-high nine. Aroldis Chapman took the loss as he allowed three runs on four hits without recording an out

Caleb Durbin had another multi-hit night, going 2-3 with an RBI.

Caleb Durbin extended his hitting streak to five as he went 2-3 tonight. He’s not hitting .588 during the hitting streak. He has four straight multi-hit games and a double in three straight games.

Aroldis Chapman’s hamstring injury may really be a problem and is affecting him. In his last two appearances alone, he has a 36.00 ERA, which has raised his ERA from 0.44 to 2.08. Both those appearances turned to losses.

Romy Gonzalez will continue his rehab this week at Triple-A Worcester, starting Tuesday. Gonzalez missed the weekend because of a hip issue. He hit .143 with a .905 OPS in three games at Portland. He had a home run, two RBI, and two runs scored. Garrett Crochet, according to Chad Tracy, is improving but is not ready to start throwing yet.

  • DSL Red Sox Blue (ROK): Kevin Morilo went 2-4 in a 7-3 loss to DSL Pirates Black.
