MLB Game Recap

The Red Sox opened the scoring in the bottom of the first as Willson Contreras singled home a run. In the bottom of the second, recently called-up Tsung-Che Cheng brought home a run on a fielder’s choice, Mickey Gasper also did the same, bringing home a run to make it 3-0. Contreras, in the third, hit a solo home run. In the fifth, Contreras walked, and the benches would clear after ball four came up and in. Was it to spark the rivalry and give the team some life? Boston added to their lead in the sixth as Connor Wong drove home a run on a sacrifice fly. The Yankees got a run back in the eighth as Austin Wells brought home a run on a groundout. The Red Sox erased that run with a Wong RBI single to make it 8-1. That was the final.

Payton Tolle went seven scoreless innings. He allowed a hit, walked two, and struck out seven. Tommy Kahnle and Ryan Watson combined to go two innings, allowing a run and walking two. They didn’t issue a walk or record a strikeout.

Standout Performer

Payton Tolle shut down the Yankees’ lineup and didn’t allow a run to them. It wasn’t as electric as the first start, but it was still electric.

Key News & Notes

Marcelo Mayer went to the injured list ahead of tonight’s game with a forearm injury, which led to Cheng being recalled.

This season feels lost unless these last two games are the start of getting hot, that leadership has mentioned, but Mayer being hurt brings the question: Does Kristian Campbell deserve at least a shot for a few games? Injuries happen, and Campbell continues to get passed over. He signed a long-term deal with Boston. Why not let him get a shot?

Jake Bennett gets the ball today against Gerrit Cole. Bennett is 1-3 with a 3.71 ERA, a 1.09 WHIP, and 22 strikeouts in 26.2 innings. He’s coming off his best big league start, going six scoreless innings. He allowed four hits, didn’t issue a walk, and struck out nine.
