Key News & Notes

Contreras Wants to Stay

Willson Contreras made it known he wants to stay and finish his career in Boston after his comments to the media at the All-Star Game. He even went as far as to say he wants to end his career in Boston.

Names to Watch

The Red Sox, due to their winning streak, are likely not to sell, which means Sonny Gray will likely not be traded, especially since he’s been their best pitcher this season. Aroldis Chapman could still be dealt, but they’re likely to add. Expect it to be a big trade deadline, as it could be one that makes or breaks Craig Breslow as the CBO. So who could the Red Sox go after?

Some names to watch are Zach Neto, who wouldn’t be a bad piece to add a power right-hand bat and multiple years of control. They’ve also tried for him once already. Another is Francisco Lindor, which I think all Red Sox fans would want and give them a superstar player along with Contreras in that lineup. Another bat that’s been linked is Luis Arraez, which doesn’t make much sense; yes, he gets on base, but that’s a left-handed bat, something not needed.

My Ideal Trade Deadline

The ideal trade deadline would be to add a right-handed bat, maybe Neto, but Lindor would be the SPLASH. No matter what, they need a right-handed power bat. The Red Sox will also need a starter; down the stretch, Payton Tolle and Connelly Early will have their workload watched. Patrick Sandoval just returned from not pitching since 2024. That leaves Gray, Garrett Crochet, Ranger Suarez, and maybe Brayan Bello? Need another solidified arm in there, aside from even someone in the realm of Lance McCullers, who got dealt yesterday to the Brewers, someone who can be a number three or four. The final thing would be another bullpen arm and keep Chapman. If they can check those boxes, it’ll be a deadline where they can compete this season, especially with Marcelo Mayer, Roman Anthony, and Crochet all likely to come back.
