Last night in Rome, Georgia, at AdventHealth Stadium, the home of the Rome Emporers, baseball’s top pitching prospect took the ball for the Greensboro Grasshoppers. Right-handed pitcher Seth Hernandez came in 2-1 with Greensboro, posting a 3.68 ERA, a 1.23 WHIP, and 43 strikeouts in 29.1 innings. He also spent time with Single-A Bradenton. Entering last night between the two teams, he was 5-1 in 13 starts with a 2.04 ERA, a 0.97 WHIP, and 93 strikeouts in 57.1 innings. Last night against Rome, he needed seven strikeouts to become the first minor league pitcher with 100 strikeouts.

He struck out one in the third. Two more in the second. In the third, he struck out one to end the inning. Hernandez struck out two more in the fourth. That gave him six strikeouts and put him at 99. In the fifth, he reached 100, striking out the second-to-last batter of his outing. Hernandez finished the game going five innings, allowing a run on three hits. He walked three and struck out seven. He brought his season record to 6-1 with a 2.02 ERA, a 0.99 WHIP, and 100 strikeouts in 62.1 innings. He’s 3-1 with Greensboro, posting a 2.88 ERA, a 1.22 WHIP, and 50 strikeouts in 34.1 innings. A nice accomplishment for a young man who’s about to turn 20-years-old tomorrow.
The Game
The Grasshopper won the game 5-2. Edward Florentino singled home a run. Sammy Stafura and Murf Gray each hit solo home runs in the sixth. Axiel Plax scored on a balk, and Jhonny Severino doubled home a run. Plax went 3-4 in the win.
Wrap Up
The two teams are back at it again tonight as Cameron Keshock takes the ball for the Grasshoppers, bringing in a 2-4 record with a 5.33 ERA. First pitch is at 6:45 PM EST. Hernandez’s next start will likely be next Thursday against Bowling Green.
