MLB Spring Training Recap: Padres Storm Back Score Six in Eighth to Beat Milwaukee

The Milwaukee Brewers and San Diego Padres met for the first time this spring today.

Brewers vs. Padres 

Scoring

The Brewers jumped out to an early lead as Andrew Vaughn hit a two-run home run in the top of the first. It was Vaughn’s first home run of spring and made it 2-0 Milwaukee. The Brewers continued to add on in the first as Gary Sanchez was hit by a pitch then Brandon Lockridge hit a single. Next batter, David Hamilton, reached on a fielder’s choice. Then Jett Williams tripled home Hamilton and Sanchez to make it 4-0.

The Padres got on the board in the fourth when Miguel Andujar hit a solo home run to make it 4-1. Brandon Lockridge got the run back for Milwaukee with a solo home run, making it 5-1. It was his second home run of the spring.

In the eighth inning, the Padres’ bats exploded. Romeo Sanabria ripped a double that cleared the bases as Jose Miranda, Luis Campusano, and Pablo Reyes all scored. A few batters later Samad Taylor singled home Sanabria to tie the game. Ethan Salas who was behind Sanabria on the bases would also score to give the Padres the lead. Francisco Acuna singled home Samad Taylor who had stolen third to make it 7-5 Padres. 

Pitching

Milwaukee 

Easton McGee went one inning and didn’t allow a base runner, striking out two. Abner Uribe got the second. He allowed one hit and struck out two. Craig Yoho was next up for Milwaukee and didn’t allow anyone to reach base. In the fourth, Drew Rom allowed a home run and struck out one.

Jacob Waguespack got the fifth, and he didn’t allow a single base runner. Ethan Dorchies got the sixth; he allowed one hit and walked two, but pitched his way around it. In the seventh, the Brewers turned to Wande Torres, who allowed two hits and walked one, but he also pitched out of it, recording a strikeout. Bjorn Johnson got the bottom of the eighth and things didn’t go well for him as he allowed five runs on two hits and three walks in 0.1 innings. Joshua Quezada came in to try to stop the bleeding as he went 0.2 innings but allowed a run on two hits. 

San Diego 

JP Sears got the start for the Padres and barely made it out of the first as he allowed four runs on four hits. He didn’t allow a walk or record a strikeout. Sears went 0.2 innings. Carter Loewen got the last out in the first with a strikeout. David Morgan had the second, having an easy inning, recording a strikeout and throwing just 11 pitches. Mason Miller had the third he allowed a walk and struck out one. Wandy Peralta came in, and he also allowed a walk but struck out two.

Jeremiah Estrada had the fifth, and he loaded the bases, allowing three walks, but he got out of it and had a strikeout. Justin Yeager pitched the sixth for the Padres, allowing a hit and walking one. D.J. Snelten struggled in his one inning, giving up a run on two hits, and he struck out one. Manuel Castro had the eighth allowing one hit and striking out one. Garrett Hawkins got the ninth looking to lock down the win for San Diego and he did just that allowing one hit and walking one but he recorded a strikeout to end the game.

The Brewers are on the road tomorrow as they face the Athletics with first pitch at 3:05 PM EST. The Padres are also on the road tomorrow as they visit the Chicago Cubs with first pitch at 3:05 PM EST.
