The Downfall of Alek Manoah

The Los Angeles Angels today released right-handed pitcher Alek Manoah from his minor league deal. Manoah has had an interesting fall from grace. In 2022, Manoah finished third in Cy Young voting while with the Toronto Blue Jays; now, here we are four years later, and he’s been released by the Angels. Manoah this season has made one start at Single-A, in which he went 4.1 innings, allowing six runs, five earned, on seven hits. He walked two and struck out two. He made ten starts at Triple-A Salt Lake. Manoah went 1-7 with a 15.43 ERA, a 2.74 WHIP, and 28 strikeouts in 35 innings. He did make three appearances with the Angels, posting a 9.82 ERA, a 2.18 WHIP, and five strikeouts in 7.1 innings.

In 2022, he made 31 starts, going 16-7. He had a 2.24 ERA, a 0.99 WHIP, and had 180 strikeouts in 196.2 innings. Manoah was an All-Star and even finished 17th in MVP voting. He had been viewed as a solidified piece for the Blue Jays, but things didn’t turn out that way. Manoah has made 78 career appearances, with 75 of those coming as starts. He is 29-20 with a 3.45 ERA, a 1.18 WHIP, and 417 strikeouts in 427.1 innings. Who knows what comes next for Manoah, but in four short seasons he went from a chance at a Cy Young to the team with the worst record in the American League releasing him.
