
The Cincinnati Reds are signing 23-year-old right-handed pitcher Chase Burns to an extension, according to Jeff Passan. The extension is for seven years, worth $105 million. Burns this season has made 18 starts, going 11-1 with a 2.54 ERA, a 1.11 WHIP, and 118 strikeouts in 102.2 innings. He’s tied for second in all of baseball in wins, sixth in ERA, tied for 17th in WHIP, and 15th in strikeouts. He was also named to his first All-Star team this season; he didn’t pitch in the game, though.

The Reds drafted Burns second overall in the 2024 MLB Amateur Draft out of Wake Forest. He spent two seasons at Tennessee before transferring to Wake Forest. In his lone season at Wake Forest, he made 16 starts, going 10-1 with a 2.70 ERA, a 0.92 WHIP, and 191 strikeouts in 100 innings. He joined the Reds organization in 2025, where he pitched across three minor league levels, making 13 starts and going 7-3 with a 1.77 ERA, a 0.77 WHIP, and 89 strikeouts in 66 innings. Burns made his big league debut on June 24th last season against the Yankees, going five innings, allowing three runs on six hits. He didn’t allow a walk and struck out eight. Burns made 13 appearances, with eight coming as starts last season. He went 0-3 with a 4.57 ERA, a 1.31 WHIP, and 67 strikeouts in 43.1 innings.
