Detroit Tigers Notebook: Win-Streak Snapped, Framber Struggles, and More

The Detroit Tigers fell in the series opener against the Rangers, dropping to 38-50. They’re eight games back of the White Sox for the American League Central. They’re six games back of the final spot in the American League wild card standings.

Texas opened the scoring with a solo home run, a bases-loaded walk, and a sacrifice fly, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the second. The Rangers added to their lead in the fourth with an RBI double and an RBI single, making it 5-0. Detroit started to climb back in the fifth as Colt Keith hit a solo home run and Hao-Yu Lee hit a two-run home run to make it 5-3. The Rangers added to their lead with a solo home run in the sixth. They added three more runs in the seventh on RBI singles. The Tigers got one back on an RBI single by Ben Malgeri. The Rangers erased that with a solo home run, which made the score 10-4 and was the final. 

Framber Valdez went five innings, allowing five runs on nine hits. He walked two and struck out one. Beau Brieske was the first one out of the bullpen. He went 1.2 innings, allowing a run on a hit. He didn’t allow a walk and struck out one. Drew Sommers came in and struggled. He didn’t record an out, allowing three runs on four hits and a walk. Kenley Jansen relieved him. He went 1/3 of an inning, getting out of the jam despite issuing a walk. Kyle Finnegan got the eighth, allowing a run on three hits. He did have a strikeout. 

Standout Performer

Kevin McGonigle continues his impressive rookie campaign as he went 2-4 tonight, again one of the only Tiger hitters with multiple hits. 

Key News & Notes

Valdez, in his last two starts, has allowed nine runs on 17 hits. He’s walked two and struck out three. His strikeout numbers have certainly dipped as of late.

The Tigers are off tomorrow due to a World Cup game in Arlington, TX. They are back Saturday for the 4th of July. Jack Flaherty gets the ball. He is 1-8 with a 4.97 ERA, a 1.51 WHIP, and 87 strikeouts in 70.2 innings.
