Detroit Tigers Notebook: Tigers Take Series Opener, A.J. Hinch’s 1,000th Win, and More

The Detroit Tigers picked up a big win in the opener against the Yankees; they improved to 36-49. They’re nine games back of the White Sox for the American League Central. They’re 6.5 games back for the final spot in the American League wild card standings.

MLB Game Recap

Spencer Torkelson opened the scoring with an RBI single in the first. In the second, Matt Vierling reached on an error to bring home a run, Dillon Dingler drove home a run on a sacrifice fly, and Hao-Yu Lee singled home a run. Kevin McGonigle singled home another run to make it 7-0 in the fourth. In the bottom of the eighth, the Yankees got a three-run home run, but it wasn’t enough of a spark as the Tigers won 7-3.

Casey Mize went seven scoreless innings, allowing a hit. He didn’t allow a walk and struck out ten. Drew Sommers allowed the three runs. Drew Anderson closed the door, going an inning. He didn’t allow a base runner and struck out one.

Standout Performer

Mize, with his ten strikeouts, led the way. He shut down a solid Yankees lineup, and the ten strikeouts were a season-high.

Key News & Notes

A.J. Hinch, with the win, picked up the 1,000th of his career. He went 89-123 in two seasons at Arizona. Hinch spent five seasons with the Astros, in which he went 481-329 with two American League Pennants and a World Series title. In six seasons with the Tigers, he’s 430-465.

Tarik Skubal gets the ball tomorrow, looking to rebound after his rough return. This season, he’s 3-4 with a 3.32 ERA, a 0.99 WHIP, and 66 strikeouts in 59.2 innings. Since he returned from the injured list, he’s 0-2 in two starts with a 4.96 ERA, a 1.10 WHIP, and 21 strikeouts in 16.1 innings.
