Detroit Tigers Notebook: Dingler Has Big Night, Mize Rehab, and More

The Detroit Tigers picked up a win in the series finale against the Mariners, improving to 28–39. They’re eight games back of the Cleveland Guardians for the American League Central. They’re 4.5 games back of the Blue Jays for the final spot in the American League wild card standings.

MLB Game Recap

The Twins jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a solo home run. The Tigers responded with a Dillon Dingler solo home run. In the second, Detroit took the lead with a solo home run from Riley Greene, making it 2-1. The Twins tied it in the third with another solo home run. In the third, it was Greene again, this time with a sacrifice fly. The Twins got two more runs in the fifth, and each came on a solo home run. In the bottom of the fifth, the Tigers took the lead back as Kerry Carpenter hit a two-run home run to make it 5-4. The Tigers added more in the sixth as Dingler hit a three-run home run to make it 8-4. Detroit tacked on two more on a Gleyber Torres two-RBI single. 

Troy Melton went five innings, allowing four runs on eight hits. He didn’t walk anyone and struck out five. The bullpen of Brennan Hanifee, Drew Anderson, Tyler Holton, Kyle Finnegan, and Enmanuel De Jesus combined to go four scoreless innings. They allowed two hits, walked three, and struck out six.

Standout Performer

Dillon Dingler went 4-5 with two home runs, a double, four RBI, and three runs scored as he contributed to five of the Tigers’ ten runs.

The Tigers improved to 6-1 in June, averaging 6.7 runs per game while allowing 3.7 runs per game. Dillon Dingler in June is hitting .304 with a 1.109 OPS. He has three home runs and ten RBI. Kevin McGonigle, Sunday’s hero, is hitting .350 in June. 

Tigers starting pitching, despite not being fully healthy, has a 3.45 ERA in June, 8.0 K/9, a 3.71 FIP, and a 1.24 WHIP. The ERA is the seventh best in baseball this month, while the FIP is the fifth best. 

Casey Mize, who hopefully made his final rehab start at Single-A Lakeland. He went five innings, allowing a run on three hits. He walked one and struck out five. The lone run came on a solo home run in the first inning. The Tigers hope to have Mize back in the rotation for their upcoming road trip.

  • Toledo Mud Hens (AAA): Jace Jung went 2-4 with a grand slam and five RBI in a 12-4 win over the Saints.
  • Erie SeaWolves (AA): Brett Callahan 2-4 with a double, a two-run home run in a 10-2 win over the RubberDucks.
  • West Michigan Whitecaps (A+): Luke Shliger went 1-3 with a solo home run in a 4-2 loss to the Captains.
  • Lakeland Flying Tigers (A): Carson Rucker went 1-2 with a three-run home run and four RBI in a 7-5 win over the Threshers.
  • FCL Tigers (ROK): Maikol Orozco went 2-4 with a three-run homer, and he had four RBI in a 7-4 win over the FCL Blue Jays.
