Detroit Tigers Notebook: Tigers Win Fourth Straight, Here They Come, and More

The Detroit Tigers picked up their fourth straight win as they beat the Yankees 5-3 to start the series, improving to 34-44. They’re 7.5 games back of the Cleveland Guardians for the American League Central. They’re five games back of the Blue Jays for the final spot in the American League wild card standings.

MLB Game Recap

The Yankees opened the scoring with an RBI double in the top of the second. The Tigers’ offense responded in the third, following a triple from Zach McKinstry, Kevin McGonigle grounded out, bringing him home. Spencer Torkelson and Colt Keith each singled for home runs to make it 3-1. In the fourth, McGonigle doubled home a run, and in the fifth, a solo home run from Riley Greene made it 5-1. The Yankees got a two-run home run to bring it close, but it wasn’t enough.

Framber Valdez went six innings, allowing a run on four hits. He walked two and struck out eight. Drew Anderson, Drew Sommers, and Will Vest combined to go three innings, allowing two runs on three hits, no walks, and four strikeouts.

Standout Performer

Kevin McGonigle went 2-5 in the win, driving in two very important runs for the Tigers with an RBI groundout to tie the game and an RBI double in the fourth.

The Tigers started off a big stretch with a win against a solid pitcher, and it was their fourth straight win. They’re averaging 4.5 runs per game while allowing 2.8 runs per game. Tomorrow won’t be any easier as they’ll face Carlos Rodon, but they have Casey Mize in the middle game and Tarik Skubal in the finale. Mize is making his second start since coming off the injured list. In his first start, he took the loss, allowing three runs in 4.2 innings on six hits. He walked one and struck out three. Jack Flaherty will make a rehab start tomorrow at Double-A Erie.
