Game Recap: Tigers Bats Woke Up; Detroit Wins Second Straight

The Miami Marlins and Detroit Tigers played the middle game of their three-game series today. Casey Mize got the ball for the Tigers, making his third start of the season. Janson Junk got the ball for the Marlins.

Marlins vs. Tigers

First Three

The Tigers struck first. Kevin McGonigle led off with a double. Wenceel Perez then grounded out with McGonigle advancing to third, then Colt Keith doubled to bring home McGonigle. A few batters later, Riley Greene singled home Keith to make it 2-0. In the third, the Tigers added to their lead as McGonigle walked to lead off the inning. Dillon Dingler reached on catcher’s interference, then Greene homered to make it 5-0. Kerry Carpenter doubled but didn’t score.

Middle Three

The middle innings saw the Marlins have their chances, but the Tigers’ pitching kept them at bay. They scored in the fourth when Connor Norby brought home Liam Hicks on a sacrifice fly. Casey Mize went 5.2 innings, allowing just the one run on six hits. He walked one and struck out five. The Tigers’ offense was silent in the middle innings.

Last Three

Drew Anderson got the final three innings after relieving Mize in the sixth, and he shut down the Marlins bats. Spencer Torkelson singled home Riley Greene in the eighth to make it 6-1 Tigers. That was enough as Detroit won its second straight game.  

Player of the Game:

Riley Greene went 2-3; he was the only Tiger to record two hits in the game. Greene had four RBI with a home run nd two runs scored.
