MLB Game Recap
The Blue Jays got a solo home run in the first and a sacrifice fly in the second as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Toronto made it 3-0 in the seventh on a solo home run. The Red Sox came alive in the bottom of the seventh as they snapped a 16-inning scoreless streak. Willson Contreras, on a groundout, drove home Ceddanne Rafaela. In the bottom of the eighth, they tied it with back-to-back solo home runs from Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Caleb Durbin to make it 3-3. The Blue Jays took the lead back with an RBI double in the top of the ninth. That would be the final as the Red Sox wrap up their fourth straight. In the series, they averaged 1.3 runs per game while allowing four runs per game.
Sonny Gray went seven innings, allowing three runs on six hits. He walked one and struck out four. Justin Slaten went one inning, allowing two hits and striking out one. In the ninth, Aroldis Chapman allowed a rare run on two hits. He didn’t walk anyone and struck out one.
Standout Performer
Mickey Gasper was the only Boston hitter in the lineup who had two hits as he finished the game going 2-4 with a double in the loss.
Key News & Notes
The Red Sox homestand ended with them going 2-4. They won the first two before dropping the last four. They averaged four runs per game while allowing 3.7 runs per game.
There’s a rumor that the Red Sox could move Sonny Gray to the Chicago Cubs, and they’d bring back infielder Matt Shaw, outfielder Kevin Alcantara, and a top-30 prospect. Not a bad move for the Red Sox, who likely aren’t going to make the playoffs this season. They’d bring in a right-handed bat who’s a Massachusetts native, a 23-year-old outfielder, and you’d have to imagine the prospect would be a pitcher.
Trade Deadline List
Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel released their top 2026 trade deadline candidates. Aroldis Chapman came in eighth on the list, and they gave him a 90% chance of being traded. The reliever market is going to include a lot of teams, and the Red Sox hold the top trade piece. Willson Contreras came in ninth, though they assigned only a 25% likelihood of a trade. The Red Sox likely hold onto him for the future, as he’s been their top bat this season, and he’s a right-handed hitter unless they get an offer that completely blows them away. Sonny Gray is 15th, but they put that as 25% as well; again, he’d be dealt for a major deal like the one mentioned above. Gray also has a 2027 mutual option for $30 million with a $10 million buyout.
Jarren Duran was 24th, and that was 25%, as he has two years after this season on his contract. His name has circulated quite a bit with a jammed outfield, but the injury to Roman Anthony has unclogged things, which may keep him in Boston until the offseason. Garrett Whitlock, Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Trevor Story, Patrick Sandoval, Greg Weissert, Danny Coulombe, and Masataka Yoshida all made the list. Needless to say, the trade deadline will be very interesting for the Red Sox and for Craig Breslow.
