Detroit Tigers Notebook: Tigers Lose in Extras, Flaherty Returns, and More

The Detroit Tigers dropped the finale and the series to the Astros; they dropped to 35-49. They’re nine games back of the White Sox for the American League Central. They’re 6.5 games back for the final spot in the American League wild card standings.

The Tigers opened the scoring with a Zach McKinstry two-run home run in the second. Riley Greene in the fifth added to that as he reached on an error, scoring Kevin McGoinigle. In the seventh, the Astros got a two-run home run. Then in the eighth, they tied it with a solo home run. The Astros then scored four in the tenth. The Tigers got a two-run home run by Spencer Torkelson, but it wasn’t enough as they lost 7-5.

Jack Flaherty went five innings in his return; he didn’t allow a run, but did allow two hits, walked three, and struck out nine. Kenley Jansen took the loss, allowing four runs, three earned, on two hits. He walked one and struck out one.

Jack Flaherty pitched well in his return, and if he continues to pitch as he did down the stretch, it gives Detroit another arm as they try to make a run.

The Tigers finished the homestand going 5-5, averaging 4.3 runs per game while allowing 3.6 runs per game. It started out with four straight wins before dropping five of their last six game.

They now head to the Bronx for a series with the Yankees. Casey Mize gets the ball for the opener. He’s 2-5 with a 2.95 ERA, a 1.07 WHIP, and 58 strikeouts in 58 innings.
