Detroit Tigers Notebook: Tough Loss, Flaherty Returns, and More

The Detroit Tigers dropped the third game of the four-game series with the Astros. They dropped to 35-48. They’re nine games back of the White Sox for the American League Central. They’re six games back for the final spot in the American League wild card standings.

MLB Game Recap

The Astros snapped a ten-inning scoreless drought in the second with a two-run home run. They added a run in the third on an RBI groundout. In the bottom of the third with the bases loaded, Kerry Carpenter crushed a grand slam to give the Tigers a 4-3 lead. The Astros tied it up with an RBI single. Tigers took the lead back in the fourth with an RBI double. They then added to it with Hao-Yu Lee’s solo home run. The Astros got a run back in the seventh with an RBI single. They would add three more in the eighth to give them the lead and win 8-6.

Framber Valdez went six innings, allowing four runs on eight hits. He didn’t issue a walk and struck out two. Will Vest in the eighth allowed three runs, two earned on four hits. He didn’t allow a walk and struck out two. Vest took the loss.

Kerry Carpenter went 2-4 with four RBI, all on the grand slam. He did score two runs.

Jack Flaherty returns tomorrow. He’s 1-8 with a 5.35 ERA, a 1.55 WHIP, and 78 strikeouts in 65.2 innings. In his rehab start, he went 5.2 innings, allowing two runs on three hits. He walked one and struck out seven in 5.2 innings.
