Detroit Tigers Notebook: Missed Chances, Rehabs Struggle in Toledo, and More

The Detroit Tigers dropped the middle game against the Twins, dropping to 28-40. They’re 8.5 games back of the Chicago White Sox for the American League Central. They’re 5.5 games back of the Rangers for the final spot in the American League wild card standings.

MLB Game Recap

The Twins jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a solo home run in the second after an hour rain delay. The Tigers tied it up in the bottom of the third on a Gleyber Torres double to drive home Kevin McGonigle. The Twins took the lead back with a three-run home run in the fifth, making it 4-1. The Tigers got two runs back in the fifth on a Kerry Carpenter single. They had a chance to tie it with a runner at third and one out, but Minnesota got out of the jam. The Twins tacked on two more runs in the seventh to add to their lead, making it 6-3. The Tigers got a run in the bottom of the ninth as Dillon Dingler singled home a run to make it 6-4, but that was it, and the Tigers dropped the middle game.

Framber Valdez got the start, going five innings after waiting out the rain delay. He allowed four runs on six hits. Valdez allowed two walks and struck out two. The bullpen, with a combination of Brennan Hanifee, Ty Madden, Drew Sommers, and Beau Brieske, went four innings. They allowed two runs on six hits. The bullpen walked three and struck out one.

Standout Performer

Gleyber Torres went 3-4 with an RBI in the loss. He had a double in the game, which was the Tigers’ only extra-base hit.

Yesterday, we talked about how Casey Mize looked, but Justin Verlander didn’t fare so well in his rehab appearance. He went 5.2 innings, allowing four runs on five hits. He walked two and struck out three. Kenley Jansen also rehabbed and struggled, lasting only 0.2 innings, allowing three runs on two hits. He walked one and struck out one.
