Detroit Tigers Notebook: Tigers Drop the Opener, Two Hits, Flaherty Hurt, Roster Moves Impressed, and More

The Detroit Tigers dropped the series opener to Cleveland and are now 29-41. They’re nine games back of the Chicago White Sox for the American League Central. They’re five games back of the Rangers for the final spot in the American League wild card standings.

MLB Game Recap

The Guardians opened the scoring with an RBI single. They added to that lead with an RBI triple, making it 2-0. The Tigers got a run back in the top of the third. James Outman, in his debut with Detroit, hit a solo home run. The Guardians added another run on an RBI single. In the top of the eighth, Spencer Torkelson hit a solo home run to make it a one-run game. Detroit was unable to score in the ninth, dropping the opener, only managing two hits, which came via the long ball.

Jack Flaherty went three innings leaving the game with a leg injury. He allowed two runs on three hits. He walked one and struck out one. Jacob Waguespack made his Tigers debut, going an inning, allowing a walk, walking one, and striking out one.

Standout Performer

The Bullpen, with a combination of Waguespack, Drew Sommers, Drew Anderson, and Ty Madden, kept the Tigers in the game. They combined to go five innings, allowing a run on six hits. They walked one and struck out seven.

Key News & Notes

The Tigers had conversations about going to a six-man rotation. Depending on Flaherty’s injury that conversation may be put on hold and it may remain a five-man rotation with Keider Montero not needing to worry.

The Tigers made a flurry of roster moves before the game as James Outman, Kenley Jansen, and Jacob Waguespack all joined the roster. Zack Short was designated for assignment, and Brenan Hanifee, along with Beau Brieske, were optioned to Triple-A Toledo.
