The team’s biggest current roster weakness is undeniably starting pitching depth. The injuries are severe. Expected ace Cade Horton is out for the season following a second Tommy John procedure. Veteran Justin Steele recently suffered a setback in his rehab. This setback will likely sideline him beyond the All-Star break. Most recently, Matthew Boyd was lost to meniscus surgery following a fluke injury at home.
Shota Imanaga and Edward Cabrera have performed admirably. However, the rotation is currently rounded out by back-end arms like Jameson Taillon and Colin Rea. Boston has shown interest in Matt Shaw, who Alex Bregman and Nico Hoerner currently block. In return, the Cubs could target young, MLB-ready lefties like Payton Tolle or Connelly Early. In my view, this deal would reflect the uncertainty in their confidence in Boyd for the rest of the year. It would also indicate their confidence in Justin Steele being a contributor when it matters most this season. I do not see Shaw being moved. However, Pedro Ramirez has been on fire since spring training. He is a name to watch. Teams could be asking for his services if Shaw is off the table.
The Right Move for Right Now
Wait and see approach, that’s the right move right now. I would have the conversations with the Giants, Mets, Twins, and even the Red Sox at this time. Gage their interest in moving on from one of their starting pitchers mentioned above. A young, controllable arm would be more desirable. However, it might be more cost-effective, asset-wise, to look for a veteran arm. The Boston move above was a big swing. It benefits the team in the now and in the future. However, it also takes a very productive and flexible Matt Shaw off the roster. I would not do that right now. If Sonny Gray were to waive his no-trade clause, the cost might be tolerable now.
As the August 3 trade deadline approaches, Jed Hoyer and Carter Hawkins have an important decision to make. Are they willing to part with “blocked” elite prospects like Shaw, Pedro Ramirez, James Triantos, or Jefferson Rojas? They might need to do so to secure a frontline starter.
