MLB Game Recap

The Cubs tied a franchise record with eight home runs in a single game. They scored their most runs at home since 1977. Seiya Suzuki ignited the offense with a three-run shot in the first inning. This was his 100th career home run. Michael Conforto added two homers of his own. Starting pitcher Colin Rea battled through five innings. He worked out of two bases-loaded jams. He earned his sixth victory of the season.

Standout Performer

Dansby Swanson finished 3-for-5 with three home runs, eight RBIs, and four runs scored. His career-high eight RBIs rank as the second-most in major league history by a player batting ninth. He now holds a franchise record with 26 RBIs over his last 10 games.

Key News & Notes

There was significant movement in the Cubs’ roster. Utility man Matt Shaw went to the 10-day IL with a left wrist sprain. Ethan Roberts was placed on the 15-day IL due to forearm inflammation. Pitcher Jameson Taillon is scheduled for his first rehab assignment on July 5 with Triple-A Iowa. He threw a successful live batting practice on Wednesday. Meanwhile, President Jed Hoyer continues to explore pitching trades. He is specifically looking at targets like Clay Holmes and Stephen Kolek. They aim to address a rotation decimated by injuries.

Farm Report

  • Triple-A Iowa Cubs: BJ Murray went 1-for-3. He hit a home run and took a walk in a 7-4 loss to the Toledo Mud Hens. Murray’s 10th homer of the year gave the team a late spark. However, the Iowa bullpen could not overcome an early five-run deficit.
  • Double-A Knoxville Smokies: Andy Garriola finished 1-for-4. He hit a home run and had two RBIs. The team suffered an 8-3 defeat to the Columbus Clingstones. His two-run blast in the ninth inning was his 17th of the season.
  • High-A South Bend Cubs: Logan Poteet went 2-for-4 with a home run. He also had a walk and two RBIs. The game resulted in a narrow 9-8 loss in 10 innings to the Beloit Sky Carp. South Bend lost the lead in the bottom of the 10th. The offensive effort featured three total home runs.
  • Low-A Myrtle Beach Pelicans: Jairo Diaz went 1-for-4. He hit a double and recorded an RBI in a 6-2 loss against the Hickory Crawdads. The Pelicans’ offense remained quiet until a two-run ninth-inning rally.

Deep Dive: Pitching Reclamation Projects

The Chicago Cubs’ front office is facing a rotation crisis. Injuries have “decimated” the staff. The team has lost Edward Cabrera, Ben Brown, Justin Steele, Cade Horton, and Jameson Taillon to various ailments. Only three active pitchers currently on the roster have made multiple starts this year. They are Shota Imanaga, Colin Rea, and Javier Assad. The team acquired David Peterson from the Mets. Following this acquisition, they are reportedly scouting three primary bounce-back targets. These targets are Clay Holmes, Walker Buehler, and Stephen Kolek.

Clay Holmes is currently on the 60-day IL with a fractured fibula. He has been excellent when healthy, posting a 2.39 ERA and a 56% ground ball rate. The Cubs’ elite defense could theoretically maximize his effectiveness once he returns in August. Walker Buehler represents a higher-upside play; he has lowered his ERA to 3.96 and posted a 2.05 ERA over his last five starts for the Padres. However, acquiring Buehler is complicated by the fact that the Padres remain direct competitors in the Wild Card race.

Finally, Stephen Kolek of the Royals offers a controllable option through 2028. While his ERA sits at 4.15, his hard slider generates an impressive 42.7% whiff rate, and he typically provides at least five innings per start. With the Royals in a free-fall, he may be an affordable innings-eater for a desperate Chicago staff.

Looking Ahead

The Cubs have a scheduled off-day on Thursday before hosting a home series against the St. Louis Cardinals beginning Friday. Chicago has not yet announced a starter for the opener, but they are slated to face right-hander Andre Pallante (9-5, 3.83 ERA).

The Cubs’ offense is officially on fire. However, the rotation is a patchwork quilt. It is held together by waiver claims and prospect call-ups. What do you think?
