The Boston Red Sox have their home opener today against the San Diego Padres. Sonny Gray will get the ball. Today they placed right-handed pitcher Johan Oviedo on the injured list with a right elbow strain. Right-handed pitcher Garrett Whitlock is going on the paternity list. To take their spots on the roster the Red Sox are recalling right-handed pitcher Zack Kelly and Tyler Uberstine from Triple-A Worcester.

Johan Oviedo

Oviedo has appeared in one game this season going 3.2 innings allowing four runs on six hits. He walked one and struck out three. Expected to be the number five starter Connelly Early took that spot and moved to the bullpen. This spring in five starts he went 1-0 with a 4.91 ERA, a 1.50 WHIP, and 17 strikeouts in 14.2 innings. 

Garrett Whitlock

Whitlock in three appearances this season, has yet to allow a run. He has given up two hits, walked two, and struck out four. In four spring appearances, he went 1-0 without allowing a run on a hit, didn’t issue a walk, and struck out three. 

Zack Kelly

Kelly in Worcester made two appearances without allowing a run, he’s allowed a hit issues no walks, and struck out two. This spring made seven appearances going 1-0 with a 5.40 ERA, a 1.80 WHIP, and four strikeouts in 6.2 innings. 

Tyler Uberstine 

Uberstine made one start at Triple-A went four innings allowing a run on two hits. He walked one and struck out three. Uberstine made four appearances this spring going 0-2 with a 6.14 ERA, a 1.50 WHIP, and 11 strikeouts in 7.1 innings. He is the Red Sox 15th ranked prospect.
