Boston Red Sox Notebook: Six Straight, Another Sweep, Contreras Suspension, and More

The Boston Red Sox secured their sixth straight win and another series sweep; they improved to 43-48. They’re 12.5 games back of the Rays for the American League East. They’re 2.5 games back for the final spot in the American League wild card standings.

The Red Sox got on the board first in the fourth on a Caleb Durbin two-run home run. The White Sox got a run back in the home half of the fifth with an RBI single, but that would be it as the Red Sox completed the sweep.

Patrick Sandoval made his Red Sox debut and first big league start since June 21, 2024. He went 4.1 innings, allowing a run on five hits. He walked one and struck out five. Tyron Guerrero, Garrett Whitlock, and Justin Slaten combined to go 3.2 innings, allowing two hits, no walks, and struck out four. Aroldis Chapman got his 19th save.

Caleb Durbin had the big hit, going 1-4 with the two-run home run.

The Boston Red Sox made a roster move before the game as they placed left-handed pitcher Ranger Suarez on the 15-day injured list with a left groin strain. Suarez left Sunday’s start against the Angels after 2.2 innings, allowing three runs on six hits. They recalled recently acquired infielder Brett Harris. Harris, in five games at Worcester, hit .167 with a .573 OPS. He had a home run, six RBI, and three runs scored. In today’s game, he went 0-for-2.

Willson Contreras didn’t play today as he finally had a decision on his suspension, which will be five games. His first game back will now be the second game of their doubleheader against the Rays on July 17th.

Anthony Seigler was in the lineup tonight after leaving last night’s game. He went 0-2 with a walk.

Sonny Gray gets the ball in Queens against the Mets to start the series. He’s 10-1 with a 2.61 ERA, a 1.10 WHIP, and 82 strikeouts in 89.2 innings. In his last seven starts, he’s 5-0 with a 1.97 ERA, a 1.01 WHIP, and 48 strikeouts in 45.2 innings. In his last three, he’s 2-0 with a 0.89 ERA, a 0.83 WHIP, and 27 strikeouts in 20.1 innings.
