Game Recap: Red Sox Shut Out Tigers; Complete Series Sweep

The Boston Red Sox finished off the series sweep of the Detroit Tigers tonight with a 4-0 victory. Four pitchers combined to throw a shutout. Sonny Gray, Tyler Samaniego, Zack Kelly, and Greg Weissert all pitched for Boston.

The Red Sox got on the board in the top of the third inning after Caleb Durbin doubled, and Willson Contreras hit a sacrifice fly, each scoring one run.

Gray earned the win for Boston. The righty in his return surrendered four hits and zero runs over five innings, striking out two and walking two. Jack Flaherty took the loss for Detroit. The righty went five innings, allowing four runs, two earned on three hits, striking out 10 and walking one. Kelly, Weissert, and Samaniego each threw shutout innings for the Boston Red Sox in relief.

Player of the Game

Sonny Gray returned from the injured list and allowed only six base runners in five innings. He didn’t allow a run and struck out two on just 70 pitches.
