Boston Red Sox Notebook: Red Sox Take Opener, Chad Tracy Gives Injury Update, and More

The Boston Red Sox drop the finale, the only way they know how; they’re 32-46. They’re 14.5 games back of the Yankees for the American League East. They’re five games back of four teams for the final spot in the American League wild card standings.

MLB Game Recap

The Yankees made it a 1-0 lead early with an RBI single. They added to that lead in the fourth with a solo home run. The Red Sox bats woke up in the fifth with an RBI fielder’s choice from Willson Contreras. Jarren Duran tied it with a sacrifice fly. Caleb Durbin continued his red-hot June with a two-run home run to make it 4-2. The Yankees got a run back with an RBI groundout in the seventh. The Red Sox added to their lead as Nate Eaton was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and Ceddanne Rafaela hit into a force out, bringing home a run to make it 6-3.

Connelly Early went six innings, allowing two runs on five hits. He walked one and struck out nine. Greg Weissert started the seventh, going 0.2 innings; he allowed a run on a hit and a walk. Danny Coulombe cleaned it up. Garrett Whitlock pitched the eighth; he didn’t allow a base runner and had a strikeout. Aroldis Chapman got the ninth; he allowed two hits and a walk but shut the door for the win.

Caleb Durbin had another two-hit game as he went 2-3 with two RBI and two runs scored in the win.

Key News & Notes

Delayed flight. The Red Sox, for the second straight season, had a flight delayed, and they didn’t arrive back home until yesterday morning at 6:00 AM.

Chad Tracy gave an injury update before last night’s game. Romy Gonzalez is still on track to make his season debut Saturday. Isiah Kiner-Falefa’s follow-up testing has been delayed. It will happen today instead of yesterday. Jovani Moran made a rehab appearance last night, going one inning, allowing a hit, no walks, and striking out two. Triston Casas is making progress as he’s starting to hit off a machine. There were no updates on Roman Anthony and Garrett Crochet.
