Boston Red Sox News & Notes 05/16/2026

The Boston Red Sox dropped to 18-26 last night after losing in extras. They’re 11.5 games back of the Rays for first place in the American League East. They’re three games back of the Seattle Mariners for the final spot in the American League wild card standings.

MLB Game Recap

The Red Sox went down 2-0 in the first half of the game after solo home runs from Drake Baldwin and Michael Harris. They would come back to tie the game. Mickey Gasper singled home a run in the sixth. In the seventh Marcelo Mayer singled home a run to make it 2-2. In extras after the Red Sox were unable to scored Mike Yastrzemski singled home a run to walk off the Red Sox. Connelly Early went five innings allowing two runs on six hits; he didn’t issue a walk and struck out six.

Standout Performer

Ceddanne Rafaela led the Red Sox once again going 2-3 with a double and he also drew a walk.

Key News & Notes

Tyler Samaniego is still a solid arm he’s just hit a rough stretch after last night and tonight. The rest of the Red Sox relievers outside of Samaniego went four innings allowing one base runner and striking out five. Andruw Monasterio is on a five-game hitting streak.
