NCAA Regional Game Recap: Pack Jr. & Longhorns’ Home Run Barrage Overwhelms Holy Cross

The Texas Longhorns and Holy Cross Crusaders kicked off the Austin Regional this afternoon. The Longhorns had lefty Luke Harrison take the ball, bringing in a 6-3 record with a 4.63 ERA, a 1.31 WHIP, and 80 strikeouts in 72 innings. The Crusaders countered with a righty in Jaden Wywoda, who brought in a 6-4 record with a 3.76 ERA, a 1.03 WHIP, and 79 strikeouts in 93.1 innings. Texas entered the game 40-13, while Holy Cross was 25-28. Texas saw its SEC tournament end in an 8-1 loss to Arkansas in the quarterfinals. Holy Cross won the Patriot League tournament, claiming an automatic bid.

Texas vs. Holy Cross

The Longhorns opened the scoring in the bottom of the first. Freshman Anthony Pack Jr. hit a solo home run to make it 1-0. In the bottom of the second, Texas added to its lead as Ashton Larson singled home Adrian Rodriguez to make it 2-0. Texas added two more in the third as Pack Jr. hit a two-run home run to make it 4-0. In the bottom of the fourth, they tacked on three more. First, Aiden Robbins hit a solo home run, then Temo Becerra doubled home Pack Jr, and Carson Tinney to make it 7-0.

The Longhorns’ lineup exploded for four more in the fifth as Robbins and Pack each hit two-run home runs to make it 11-0. In the sixth, after an RBI double, Jayden Duplantier hit a grand slam to make it 16-0. Texas got two more runs in the seventh and one in the eighth to make it 19-0. The Crusaders would get a run at the top of the ninth to end the shutout.

Harrison went four shutout innings, allowing two hits, no walks, and struck out seven. Wywoda went 4.2 innings, allowing eight runs on 11 hits. He walked three and struck out two.

Next Up

Texas will face the winner of UC Santa Barbara and Tarleton State tomorrow, while Holy Cross will face the loser of that game.
