NCAA Regional Day 4 Storylines: Final Six Spots in Super Regionals Claimed, Surprises Everywhere

The NCAA Regional round saw ten of the 16 spots in the Super Regionals claimed on Sunday, leaving six spots open entering Monday’s winner-take-all games.

St. John’s Eliminates Host

The Red Storm needed a win to advance as Florida State looked to force a winner-take-all game. The Seminoles took a 2-0 lead after 4.5 innings. St. John’s responded in the bottom of the fifth with four runs and added another run in the sixth. Florida State made it a close game in the ninth with a two-run home run, but they couldn’t add the tying run.

Oklahoma Comes Back to Eliminate Georgia Tech

Another host was sent home as the Sooners eliminated the Yellow Jackets in extra innings. Georgia Tech led 7-6 after eight, but in the ninth, Oklahoma tied it, and they won the game in the tenth on a walk-off home run.

Troy Finishes the Job

The Trojans went through the losers’ bracket and forced a winner-take-all game today. The bats continued to be red hot as they sent the Gainesville Regional host Gators home in a 10-2 win behind Jabe Boroff who went 3-4 with five RBI. The Super Regionals will be a battle of the Trojans between Little Rock and Troy.

Morgantown Rocks

The Mountaineers picked up the win against Kentucky to move on to the Super Regionals. West Virginia rode the momentum of the hometown fans to get the job done. The Mountaineers led 5-1 at one point, but Kentucky tied it at 5-5, forcing the game to extras. West Virginia, with a fly ball that fell in, saw the winning run come home, and they advanced to the Super Regionals.

Auburn Advances

The Tigers after dropping their first game of the tournament to the Panthers came back to beat Milwaukee on Sunday and yesterday as they outscored them 16-4 over the two games. 

USC Claims Final Spot

The Trojans sent home host Texas A&M with a 7-1 win last night. The Trojans also won Sunday night to force the winner-take-all game last night. They outscored the Aggies 21-4 over the two games.

Super Regionals

The Super Regional matchups are set. The series will be a best-of-three and the winner will head to the College World Series. Cal Poly will head to Morgantown to face West Virginia. The battle of the Trojans in Troy as Little Rock and Troy face off. USC will head to Chapel Hill and face the Tar Heels. An SEC battle in Auburn with Ole Miss and Auburn facing off.

On the other side of the bracket. Oklahoma will head to Lawrence and face Kansas. Tuscaloosa will host a Super Regional as St. John’s and Alabama meet. Texas and Oregon will battle in Austin. Finally, another SEC battle as Mississippi State and Georgia meet in Athens. Georgia is the highest remaining seed in the tournament.
