NCAA Regional Day 3 Storylines: Top Seed’s Season Ends, Surprise Winner-Take-All Games

The third day of the NCAA tournament saw seasons end for quite a few teams.

UCLA Eliminated

St. Mary’s did it again. The Bruins, facing the Gaels for the second time in three days, looking to advance to the Regional Finals, lost in extra innings 6-5. The Gaels scored in the ninth to tie the game, then in the tenth to win the game and eliminate the tournament’s top seed.

2025 Runner-Up Eliminated

The defending champion, the LSU Tigers, did not make the tournament. Now the runner-up has been eliminated as Coastal Carolina resumed their game from yesterday against Florida State, and they lost 2-1, ending their season.

Troy Forces Winner Take All Game

The Troy Trojans had a come-from-behind 9-6 win over the Miami Hurricanes to start the day, eliminating the Hurricanes. They then beat the Gainesville Regional host Gators 16-9 in the nightcap to force a winner-take-all game today. Houston Markham had a big day, going 7-9 with a double, two home runs, two RBI, and three runs scored. Jabe Boroff went 5-9 with three home runs, six RBI, and four runs scored. Josh Pyne went 5-10 with an RBI and five runs scored. Aaron Piasecki went 6-10 with an RBI and three runs scored.

West Virginia Stays Alive in Dramatic Fashion

The Mountaineers entered the morning fighting for their lives. They beat Wake Forest 10-5 to advance to face Kentucky. They needed to win two more games after the win against the Wildcats. In the nightcap down 9-6 entering the ninth, West Virginia scored 11 to force a winner-take-all game on Monday. The Mountaineers got a bases-loaded walk and a sacrifice fly to make it a one-run game. They got a balk that scored a run and tied the game, then Paul Schoenfeld hit a massive two-run home run to take an 11-9 lead. They will play a winner-take-all game today.

Kansas Super Regional

The Jayhawks swept the weekend, and they advance to the Super Regionals after hosting their first Regional in school history.

Hosts Advance

Texas, Georgia, North Carolina, Alabama, Oregon, and Mississippi State advance to the Super Regionals. Texas beat UC Santa Barbara 6-4. The Bulldogs beat Liberty 6-1 to advance to next weekend. North Carolina beat East Carolina 9-3 to advance. Alabama beat Oklahoma State 9-7 in extra innings to punch their ticket to the super regionals. Oregon beat Oregon Stats 4-1 to advance. Mississippi State beat Louisiana 19-5 as they’re off to the Supers.

Surprise Teams

Little Rock, the four seed in the Hattislesburg Regional, beat Jacksonville State 6-3 late last night as they advance. Cal Poly eliminated Saint Mary’s as they’re off to the Super Regionals. 

A New Final Eight

The College World Series will have a different eight teams this season. Arizona, Louisville, Murray State, and LSU all failed to make the 2026 tournament. UCLA lost to St. Mary’s yesterday, Coastal Carolina lost to Florida State, Arkansas lost to Kansas, and Oregon State lost to Oregon. There will be a completely different eight teams at Omaha in 2026.
