Probable Starting Pitchers

Tampa Bay Rays vs. New York Yankees

Game 1: Nick Pivetta (5-1, 1.78 ERA) vs. Carlos Rodón (4-3, 3.43 ERA)

Pivetta will be on the hill for San Diego to kick off this Padres vs Yankees series in the Bronx. In his most recent outing, Pivetta was nothing short of dominant against San Francisco. During that start, he struck out nine in 5 1/3 innings of work, helping lead the to a 7-4 win. Meanwhile, Rodón will take the ball for the Yankees. To open his last appearance, Rodón retired the first 15 Orioles he faced, ultimately allowing just two hits and two earned runs while striking out seven over six strong innings. As a result, the Yankees were able to stay competitive throughout that game.

Game 2: Michael King (4-1, 2.09 ERA) vs. Clarke Schmidt (0-1, 5.52 ERA)

King will be pitching in New York for the first time while not in pinstripes. He was part of the blockbuster Juan Soto trade during the winter of 2023 and has since become an invaluable piece of San Diego’s rotation. In his latest performance, King helped the Padres complete a sweep of the Giants, allowing just one run while striking out six across 5.2 innings. Schmidt, by contrast, has had a rough and delayed start to his 2025 campaign. After being scratched from his last start due to hamstring tightness, he is currently listed as day-to-day. Fortunately, an MRI conducted Friday afternoon came back clean, according to Yankees manager Aaron Boone.

Game 3: Dylan Cease (1-2, 5.61 ERA) vs. Max Fried (6-0, 1.01 ERA)

Cease will be on the bump for San Diego and Fried for New York. In his most recent outing on Friday, he threw 91 pitches across just four innings, allowing two runs on three hits and issuing three walks. Cease recently met with the Padres’ pitching coaches, hoping to regain the dominance that led to his acquisition in the first place. Fried, on the other hand, has been nothing short of electric this season as the Yankees’. In his latest start against Tampa Bay, he threw a combined one-hitter, becoming the league’s first six-win pitcher. During that outing, Fried walked two and allowed one hit en route to a 3-0 Yankees victory.
