Game Recap: Skubal Struggles and Tigers’ Bats Are Quiet in Loss

The Detroit Tigers and Minnesota Twins played the second game of their four-game series tonight. Tarik Skubal got the ball for Detroit as he faced off against Taj Bradley for the Twins.

Tigers vs. Twins

First Three

The Tigers would threaten in the second inning, following a Zach McKinstry double and a Spencer Torkelson single, which gave Detroit runners on the corners. Minnesota got Parker Meadows to strike out. Javier Baez was hit by a pitch, loading the bases before Taj Bradley got the final out. Minnesota had its chance in the third after a Victor Caratini double and a Josh Bell single, but Skubal got the next two outs. The Tigers went down in order in the third. Minnesota got singles from Brooks Lee and Byron Buxton to start the third, but Skubal escaped that as well.

Middle Three

Minnesota once again gave Skubal a scare in the fourth after Ryan Jeffers reached on a single, and then after back-to-back strikeouts, Matt Wallner singled before Skubal got Royce Lewis to fly out. The Twins struck through in the bottom of the fifth. Byron Buxton and Austin Martin drew one-out walks, followed by a Luke Keaschall single that scored Buxton. Ryan Jeffers would then double home Keaschall and Martin to make it 3-0 Twins. Josh Bell doubled home Jeffers, and that made it 4-0 Twins, and Skubal’s night was done. He went 4.2 innings, allowing four runs on eight hits. He walked two and struck out seven. The Twins went down in order in the sixth.

Last Three

The Tigers got on the board in the seventh. Following back-to-back singles. The Twins got Javier Baez to strike out. That would do it for Taj Bradley. Two batters later, rookie Kevin McGonigle singled to bring home Torkelson to make it 4-1. That’s where it ended for the Tigers. Detroit had a chance after back-to-back walks the Twins got out of the inning. Minnesota would load the bases in the bottom of the inning, but the Tigers’ bullpen got out of the jam. The Tigers in the ninth got a leadoff double from Baez, and the rookie McGonigle brought home his second RBI of the game with a double. The double wasn’t enough as the Tigers dropped the second game of the series 4-2.

Player of the Game

Ryan Jeffers goes 1-4. He had two RBI and a run scored. He had his second double of the season.
