Casey Mize Leaves Start, Javier Baez Carted off Against Braves

The Detroit Tigers currently trail the Atlanta Braves in the first game of their three-game series. The Tigers starter, Casey Mize, left the start in the third inning after going 2.1 innings, allowing two runs on three hits. He walked one and struck out. Reports are that Mize left the game with right groin tightness. Tigers outfielder Javier Baez also had to leave the game and had to be carted off with a leg injury. Baez was 0-2 on the night. The Tigers trail the Braves 2-0. Mize, entering tonight’s game, was 2-1 in five starts. He posted a 2.51 ERA, a 1.15 WHIP, and 32 strikeouts in 28.2 innings. Baez, entering tonight, was hitting .263 with a .696 OPS. He had five doubles, two home runs, six RBI, and ten runs scored.

Casey Mize

The Tigers drafted Mize first overall in the 2018 MLB Amateur Draft out of Auburn University. In three seasons at Auburn, he made 46 appearances with 36 of those coming as starts, going 20-13 with a 2.96 ERA, a 0.98 WHIP, and 324 strikeouts in 267.1 innings. He made his big league debut on August 9, 2020, against the White Sox. He went 4.1 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits. Mize didn’t issue a walk and struck out seven. In six seasons in Detroit, he made 94 appearances, with 92 of those coming as starts. He is 25-26 with a 4.09 ERA, a 1.28 WHIP, and 397 strikeouts in 468.2 innings. He had his best season last season, making 28 starts, going 14-6 with a 3.87 ERA, a 1.27 WHIP, and a career high 139 strikeouts in 149 innings.

Javier Baez

The Chicago Cubs drafted Baez with the ninth overall pick in the 2011 MLB Amateur Draft. He made his big league debut on August 5, 2014, going 1-6 with a solo home run. In 1,371 career games, he’s hitting .252 with a .725 OPS. He has 239 doubles, 30 triples, 195 home runs, 691 RBI, and 663 runs scored. In five seasons with the Tigers, he’s appeared in 509 games. Baez is hitting .231 with a .629 OPS. He has 79 doubles, 11 triples, 46 home runs, 226 RBI, and 212 runs scored.
