Game Recap: Baez Homers, Tigers Shut Out Marlins; Snap Five-Game Skid

The Miami Marlins and Detroit Tigers started a three-game series tonight. Keider Montero got the ball for the Tigers, making his second start of the season. Chris Paddack got the ball for the Marlins.

Marlins vs. Tigers

First Three

The Marlins threatened early as Xavier Edwards showed off his speed with a one-out triple. The Marlins were unable to get him home. The Tigers would get on the board first, scoring in the home half of the second. After back-to-back singles from Dillon Dingler and Kerry Carpenter, Spencer Torkelson singled home Dingler to make it 1-0. Both teams went down in order in the third.

Middle Three

The first 1.5 innings of the middle part of the game were quiet, but in the bottom of the fifth, Javier Báez hit a solo home run. The first homer of the season for Báez. Montero continued to shut down the Marlins, going six shutout innings, allowing two hits. He walked one and struck out three. Paddack, on the other hand, also pitched well, going six innings, giving up two runs on seven hits. He walked one and struck out four.

Last Three

Both teams went down in order in the seventh. Kyle Finnegan pitched the eighth for the Tigers, and after allowing a leadoff walk to Connor Norby, he got Graham Pauley out on a lineout, and Detroit doubled off Norby at first base. Finnegan got the last out on a groundout, throwing just 12 pitches. The Tigers had two runners reach in the eighth, but the Marlins got out of it. In the ninth, Kenley Jansen came in for a save opportunity, and he retired the Marlins in order to give the Tigers a 2-0 win.

Player of the Game:

Javier Baez. He went 1-3 with a solo home run that gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead and a cushion en route to the win.
