In Baltimore on Sunday morning, the Boston Red Sox addressed a stunning early-season decision, as Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow and President/CEO Sam Kennedy spoke to reporters following the firing of manager Alex Cora. Notably absent was owner John Henry, though Kennedy said he remained in Baltimore, adding, “Bres and I have a job to do.”

The Press Conference
Alex Cora
The message from leadership stayed consistent throughout: the move was “painful but necessary.” The organization framed the decision as a broader reset rather than a reaction to any single moment. Breslow confirmed the club made the call Saturday morning, emphasizing belief in the roster as a driving force. By acting now, the Red Sox give themselves roughly 135 games to realign and pursue the postseason expectations set during spring training.
“This is about a fresh start,” Kennedy said. “A new beginning starts today.”
Despite the managerial change, both executives reiterated full confidence in the clubhouse. Breslow described his relationship with Cora as strong but explained that a different voice became necessary. “It’s not about what Alex was or wasn’t doing,” he said. “We believe in the players, and we believe a new direction is needed.”
The decision came after roughly 72 hours of internal discussions between Breslow and ownership. “We didn’t evaluate this game-to-game,” Breslow said. “We made a decision to move forward with a lot of season still ahead.”
The New Regime
That new direction begins with interim manager Chad Tracy, a familiar presence within the organization. Breslow pointed to Tracy’s ability to connect with both young talent and veterans, calling him “a consistent and stabilizing voice” who has already earned trust. While Tracy takes over immediately, Breslow noted the club will continue evaluating long-term options.
Questions remain, including the future role of Jason Varitek and how the rest of the coaching staff will shake out. For now, the focus shifts to the field.
Closing:
Sam Kennedy and Craig Breslow continued to say the same thing over and over again leaving the feeling that there was something behind the scenes going on they didn’t want to talk about. Today’s lineup will say everything when it comes out and the next time they face a left-handed pitcher that lineup will say so much more.
