Boston Red Sox Notes: Wong & Durbin Have Big Days, Durbin & IKF Heating Up, and More

The Boston Red Sox picked up a win to improve to 24–33. They’re 12 games back of the Tampa Bay Rays for the American League East. They’re four games back of the Blue Jays for the final spot in the American League wild card standings.

MLB Game Recap

The Guardians struck first in the first inning. The Red Sox in the fourth got a run back. Caleb Durbin hit a sacrifice fly to tie it at 1-1. In the sixth, Connor Wong hit a ball that just missed being a home run by inches. Marcelo Mayer scored on the play. In the eighth, they added to their lead as Durbin doubled to make it 3-1.

The Boston lineup exploded in the ninth. Masataka Yoshida drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 4-1, then Wong singled home two runs and advanced to second on a throwing error. Jarren Duran, with runners on second and third, hit a three-run home run to make it 9-1. The Guardians went down in order in the ninth, and the Red Sox took the middle game of their three-game series. Sonny Gray got the start, allowing one run in six innings of work. He walked three and allowed four hits while striking out seven.

Caleb Durbin went 2-4 on the day with two RBI in the Red Sox win. He put the ball in play in every at-bat he had in the game.

Key News & Notes

Durbin is starting to heat up after being called out to start the season due to his struggles. In his last three games, he’s 5-12 with three doubles, four RBI, and a run scored. Isiah Kiner-Falefa continues to be a key cog for Boston. He’s on a six-game hitting streak during which he’s hitting .526 with a double, a home run, five RBI, and four runs scored.
