The Yankees made waves before yesterday’s trade deadline, reinforcing the bullpen and adding bench depth. As a corresponding move, the Yankees released Marcus Stroman to make room on the 26-man roster. His time in pinstripes was short lived, but he brought an energy that the club needed at the time of his signing.

Stroman’s Contributions

Stroman ended his Yankee tenure with a record of 13-11 and a 4.69 ERA. While his pitch-to-contact style didn’t fit well with a New York team that struggles defensively, Stroman will unquestionably find a home with a team that needs veteran pitching. His release comes on the heels of last year’s American League Rookie of the Year, Luis Gil, making his first start in Sunday’s matchup against the Miami Marlins. Stroman is owed the remainder of his $18 million dollar contract, but will not receive any incentives. Marcus Stroman isn’t the pitcher he used to be, but that doesn’t mean a team won’t find him useful.

Landing Spots

Marcus Stroman isn’t the pitcher he used to be, but that doesn’t mean a team won’t find him useful. The Guardians, for example, just lost Emanuel Clase as a result of the league’s gambling investigation into the Cleveland closer. The team is only playing .500 baseball, but they’re only three games out of a wildcard spot. If the money is right, Stroman could at least eat some innings down the stretch.

The San Francisco Giants are another possible landing spot. They dealt two top relievers in Camilo Doval and Tyler Rogers, so there is definitely space in their rotation. San Francisco has had challenges all season with their rotation, so maybe a stabalizing veteran could give them to boost they need.

Finally, Marcus Stroman could have a reunion in the north side of Chicago. The Cubs had a dissapointing deadline, but are among the National League’s best playoff contenders. Stroman last pitched in Chicago in 2023 but struggled in the second half of that season. He still finished with a sub-4 ERA, however, and could possibly give the Cubs an extra boost to get past a red hot Milwaukee Brewers club.

What This Means for the Yankees’ Rotation

The Yankees have made several changes to both their rotation and their bullpen over the last three weeks. Brian Cashman added several top relievers before yesterday’s trade deadline, and the team seems to be more comfortable with Cam Schlittler than Marcus Stroman. With Luis Gil coming back this weekend, there didn’t seem to be a clear place for Stroman. Especially with the Yankees just three and a half games back from the Toronto Blue Jays and fewer than 60 games left to play this season. Stroman played an important role when the team needed him most. If he can get back to form, there is little doubt he will find a club to finish the season.
