Pete Crow-Armstrong is on the verge of a career-defining commitment. He and the Chicago Cubs are finalizing a long-term contract extension. This deal is reportedly worth more than $100 million. It underscores his rapid ascent from a premium trade acquisition. He has become the defensive anchor and face of the franchise.

Contract

The contract discussions represent a massive jump from the $66 million offer the outfielder turned down last spring. Industry experts highlight Jackson Merrill’s nine-year, $135 million deal. They also reference Corbin Carroll’s $111 million extension as primary comparison points for this agreement. Pete Crow-Armstrong is currently two days shy of two full years of MLB service time. This extension buys out his remaining “Super Two” arbitration years. It also secures several seasons of free agency.

Journey

His journey to Chicago began on July 30, 2021, when the Chicago Cubs acquired him from the New York Mets. The high-profile trade involved sending Javier Báez to New York. They also sent right-hander Trevor Williams and cash in the deal. In return, they received the then-19-year-old prospect. Crow-Armstrong was recovering from a shoulder injury at the time. Nevertheless, he quickly moved through the farm system. He earned Minor League Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2023. He made his major league debut on September 11 of that year.

2025 Season

In 2025, Crow-Armstrong enjoyed a historic breakout. He set a record as the fastest player in Cubs history to join the 30-30 club. He achieved this with 31 home runs and 35 stolen bases. His aggressive approach leads to some offensive volatility. Nevertheless, his record-setting 19 five-star catches and elite speed have made him an indispensable asset. This extension provides the Cubs with long-term roster clarity. It ensures that center field remains occupied by a perennial Gold Glove contender. This is regardless of upcoming free-agent departures in the outfield corners; center field remains secure for the foreseeable future.
