Riley O’Brien

O’Brien, 30, made his MLB debut with the Cincinnati Reds in 2021. Since then, he has had stints with the Seattle Mariners and the Cardinals. He joined the Cardinals organization in 2024 and has spent time with both the major league and minor league teams. In his most recent appearances with Memphis, O’Brien showcased his potential. This prompted the Cardinals to bring him back to the big league roster.

In three games with the Cardinals this season, he’s posted a 10.13 ERA, a 1.88 WHIP, and two strikeouts in 2.2 innings. In 19 games at Memphis, he is 1-0 with a 2.79 ERA, a 1.24 WHIP, and 32 strikeouts in 19.1 innings. This decision reflects the team’s strategy to evaluate O’Brien’s performance at the major league level. This is crucial due to upcoming roster considerations.

Looking Ahead

The Cardinals face a pivotal series against the Royals. O’Brien’s addition to the bullpen provides manager Oliver Marmol with an additional arm. This helps to navigate the challenges of a doubleheader. Fans will be watching closely to see how O’Brien’s skills translate back to the major league.

The first game of today’s doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1:45 AM EDT, with the second game following at 7:45 PM EDT.
