The St. Louis Cardinals are 24-18 after last night’s loss to the Athletics. They’re 2.5 games back of the Cubs for first place in the National League Central, and they’re 0.5 games back of the Dodgers for the top wild card spot in the National League; they do hold a playoff spot.

MLB Game Recap

The Cardinals jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on a Nathan Church RBI single. The A’s took the lead in the fifth on a Nick Kurtz grand slam to make it 4-1. Ivan Herrera drove home Pedro Pages on a sacrifice fly. The Athletics added a run in the seventh and eighth as the Cardinals lost 6-2. Matthew Liberatore took the loss as he allowed the grand slam to Kurtz. He went five innings, allowing four runs on nine hits. He walked two and struck out five.

Standout Performer

Alec Burleson led the way, going 3-5 in the game. He had a double and two singles in the loss.

Key News & Notes

JJ Wetherholt went 2-4 in last night’s loss. He did extend his hitting streak to five games. During the hitting streak, he’s hitting .333 with a home run, four RBI, and four runs scored.

  • Memphis Redbirds (AAA): Matt Koperniak went 2-4, driving in the lone run in a 9-1 loss to the Jumbo Shrimp.

  • Peoria Chiefs (A+): Jesus Baez went 2-5 with an RBI in a 6-4 loss to the Sky Carp.
