Cincinnati Reds April Recap: MVP, Surprises, and Early Concerns for 2025

Reds Month in Review April: MVP's, Surprises and need to bounce back

The Cincinnati Reds ended April with a record of 15-13. This was good for second place in the National League Central. They trail the Chicago Cubs by a game and a half. After a disappointing 2024 and another offseason of high expectations, the Reds delivered a mixed bag of results first month. They showcased explosive offensive ability. Their pitching has also improved to start the year. five of their 13 losses have come by one run. Three of those five were one-nothing shutouts early in April.

One of the early highlights came during a thrilling series victory over the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards. They outscored the Orioles 32-14 in the three-game series. This was a statement that the Reds intend to be serious contenders in 2025.

MVP of the Month: Elly De La Cruz

Elly De La Cruz emerged as the Reds’ offensive powerhouse in April. Over 121 at-bats, he posted a .281 batting average with 5 home runs and 24 RBI, ranking him tied for 8th in RBI across the league. His OPS stood at .786, reflecting his consistent contribution at the plate. On the base paths, Cruz has stolen 13 bases over the first full month of the season.

Biggest Surprise: Austin Hays

Acquired in an under-the-radar offseason move, Austin Hays has quickly become a key part of the Reds’ outfield mix. In just 52 at-bats, he achieved a .365 batting average, belted 5 home runs, and drove in 13 RBI. His OPS of 1.143 underscores his significant contribution to the Reds’ lineup. Hays’s bat has been a huge plus for the Reds. This is especially true with McLain and Spencer Steer struggling through the first month of the year.

Needs to Bounce Back: Matt McClain

Matt McLain faced challenges throughout April, struggling with a .159 batting average over 74 at-bats. While he managed 4 home runs and 10 RBI, his OPS of .583 indicates room for improvement as the season progresses.
