MLB Game Recap

Behind a 14-hit attack, the Cubs secured a 10-4 victory over the Pirates at PNC Park to end their slide. Starting pitcher Jameson Taillon threw 75 pitches over 5.0 innings, allowing four earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts, but did not factor in the decision. The game turned in the seventh inning. Ian Happ and pinch-hitter Michael Conforto broke the tie game with home runs. The bullpen then combined for four hitless frames of relief. Jacob Webb pitched a perfect three-strikeout sixth inning.

Standout Performer

Ian Happ was the catalyst in his hometown, finishing 2-for-6 with a home run and a season-high five RBIs. Happ opened the scoring with a two-run single in the first. He delivered the decisive blow with a three-run homer in the seventh to break a 4-4 tie. His performance extended a streak of reaching base in 40 consecutive games played in Pittsburgh.

Key News & Notes

The Cubs placed infielder Matt Shaw on the 10-day injured list with back tightness. They also promoted prospect Pedro Ramirez. He recorded two hits in the win. Manager Craig Counsell confirmed there is no structural damage to Shaw’s back and noted he is improving rapidly. Additionally, the club signed veteran lefty reliever Aaron Bummer to a minor league deal. Matthew Boyd, who is recovering, will start a rehab assignment with Triple-A Iowa. This will happen this Sunday after he had a successful live batting practice.
