MLB Game Recap
Chicago secured the shutout behind Shota Imanaga (W, 3-2), who delivered 7.0 crisp innings of four-hit ball with five strikeouts on 87 pitches. Ian Happ provided the winning margin with a second-inning solo home run. Ben Brown earned his first career save. He retired all six batters he faced in two perfect relief frames. The turning point came in the eighth. The Cubs added an insurance run via a Seiya Suzuki sacrifice fly. This play effectively ended Ildemaro Vargas’ 27-game hitting streak.
Standout Performer
Ian Happ finished a perfect 3-for-3 with a home run, triple, double, and a walk. His 399-foot blast in the second inning off Ryne Nelson gave the Cubs an early lead. Later, he doubled and tripled to help manufacture an insurance run. Happ’s performance extended his on-base streak to 23 games, currently the longest active streak in the majors. Happ is now tied for 12th with Alfonso Soriano at 181 home runs on the Cubs’ all-time home run leaderboard.
Key News & Notes
Nico Hoerner remained out of the Saturday lineup with neck tightness. He is considered day-to-day. Manager Craig Counsell described it as a “muscle thing.” It should resolve within a few days. Closer Daniel Palencia returned to the team Saturday. He came back from his rehab assignment at Triple-A Iowa. There, he reached 102 mph on the radar gun. Palencia is expected to be activated during the current homestand to resume his role in the back of the bullpen.
